Mats Hangs Up the Skates After 18 Seasons

October 1, 2009

Mats Sundin announced his retirement after 18 NHL seasons.  The 38 year old Swede scored 564 goals and had 785 assists in a long career that unfortunately never saw big Mats lofting Lord Stanley.

Sundin did see international success, though.  He took down the Olympic gold medal in 2006 at the Turin games, but said he wouldn’t play in next year’s Olympics.  A great faceoff man, Mats was the longest tenured European captain in NHL history, but BlueDuck will remember the man they call “Sudden” in Sweden most for this great Nike commercial from hockey’s heyday.
